FWC Award Descriptions

The Faculty Women’s Club continues to support a number of financial awards to UBC students annually, including ten scholarships, four bursaries, and two prizes. The capital for these endowed awards has been raised through various activities of the Club as well as bequests. The year that the scholarship was established is in brackets ( ) following the name of the scholarship.

FWC Anne Wesbrook Scholarship (1919)

This scholarship was established to honour Anne Wesbrook, wife of the first President of UBC and a founding member and Honorary President of the FWC until her death in 1957. It is awarded to a woman student who has obtained a baccalaureate degree from this university, or who has completed third year of university studies, and is continuing her studies at the graduate level in the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry or Law. The scholarship can be used at this university or another approved university.

FWC Jubilee Bursary (1968)

This bursary is awarded to assist mature women beginning or continuing studies at UBC, and is awarded on the basis of financial need.

FWC Margret MacKenzie Scholarship (1984)

This has been endowed by the FWC in honour of Margaret MacKenzie, who along with her late husband Norman MacKenzie, President Emeritus, contributed greatly to the development of UBC. It also recognizes her outstanding contributions to the Club and the University community. The award is offered to a student in any discipline with a demonstrated interest in hiking and cross-country skiing. The financial circumstances of the candidate will be considered.

FWC Vancouver Centennial Scholarship (1984)

One or more scholarships have been endowed by the FWC to commemorate Vancouver’s Centennial in 1986. Preference is given to a woman who is studying on a part-time basis towards a first undergraduate degree. The financial circumstances of the candidate may be a consideration.

FWC Ida Green Scholarship (1989)

This award has been endowed by FWC in memory of Dr. Ida Mabelle Green, LLD. Ida Green was a pioneer in the American Association of University Women and in the provision of graduate fellowships for women. With her husband Cecil H. Green, Dr Green was a major benefactor of post-secondary education and the advancement of science. The scholarship is awarded on the joint recommendation of the School of Music and the Departments of Creative Writing, Fine Arts and Theatre to a student entering the third or higher year of study in the creative or performing arts.

FWC Memorial Prize (1989)

In the memory of J. Iris Farley, this award was established by her husband, Bert Farley (Professor Emeritus in Geography), to commemorate her 30-year association with the FWC. Mrs. Farley was a teacher who sustained a life long interest in education. It is awarded at the end of the academic year to an undergraduate demonstrating excellence in cartography (on the recommendation of the department).

FWC Violet Eagles Bursary (1996)

This bursary was endowed through the bequest of Violet Eagles, Ph.D., supplemented by donations from the FWC. It recognizes Violet Eagles’ contribution as past president and longtime membership in the FWC, her teaching contribution to the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and her outstanding personal qualities. The award is offered to a female graduate student in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems.

FWC Marion Nodwell Memorial Scholarship (2003)

This award was endowed by FWC and the Nodwell family in memory of Marion Nodwell. She was a wonderful gardener and community volunteer, serving enthusiastically for many years in a variety of roles in the FWC. To reflect Marion’s interest in gardening, the scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems to a third or fourth year undergraduate or graduate student with a concentration in Horticulture. In the case of graduate students, the award is made in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

FWC Commemorative Bursary (2003)

This was endowed by FWC to honour our past members who, during their lifetimes, contributed so much to the club. The bursary is awarded on the basis of financial need, to students registered in their third or fourth year of study in any undergraduate degree program.

FWC 90th Anniversary entrance Scholarship (2007)

This scholarship was established by the  FWC to celebrate the Club’s 90th Anniversary. The scholarship is awarded to a female student beginning undergraduate studies in Engineering. The award is adjudicated by the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

FWC Patricia Chapman Memorial Scholarship in Music (2009)

This has been endowed by family and friends of Patricia Chapman for a deserving student in the Elementary or Secondary Education stream in the Bachelor of Music program in the School of Music. Patricia was a regular supporter of the Vancouver Symphony School Program, the spirit of which the scholarship perpetuates. The award is made on the recommendation of the Music School.

FWC Maebritte Jeffels Scholarship fund (2011)

This scholarship was endowed by Mrs. Maebritte Jeffels, a member of the FWC since the 1950s and who served as Club president from 1961 to 1962.  Reflecting her career in orthopedic nursing, the recipient of the award is to be a student with an interest in Orthopaedic medicine, Nursing, Occupational or Physical Therapy.

FWC Katharine Borgen Graduate Scholarship in Mathematics (2016)

This award was endowed by the Borgen family, with help from the FWC, in memory of Katharine, a longtime club member who was passionate about teaching math. The award goes to support a graduate student in mathematics education within the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, in cooperation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Financial need may be considered.

FWC 100-Year Legacy Graduate Scholarship (2017)

The year 2017 marked 100 years of the Faculty Women’s Club service on the Vancouver campus. This scholarship is designated to support a female Canadian citizen pursuing graduate studies in a health-related field [excluding MD or DDS], such as Audiology & Speech Sciences, Epidemiology (School of Population & Public Health), Microbiology & Immunology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Sciences. The recipient will be in their second or subsequent year of study, with demonstrated academic and leadership qualities; financial need may also be considered. It is adjudicated by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.       

FWC Mary and Michael Gerry Scholarship in Family Medicine (2019)

A prize has been made available through an endowment established by Mrs. Mary Gerry and the late Dr. Michael Gerry. It goes to an outstanding medical student completing the final year of the MD program who has demonstrated academic excellence and the promise of a successful career in family medicine. Candidates must be Canadian citizens to be considered. The prize is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Medicine.

FWC Childcare Bursary (2019)

This bursary is offered annually to undergraduate and graduate students with children in licensed childcare. It has been an annual FWC commitment, but is expected to reach full endowment in 2023. Preference is given to students who are single parents and families new to BC, not yet qualified for the BC childcare tax benefit. This bursary adjudicated by Enrolment Services/Financial Aid.
