Join us for an inspiring evening in conversation with Dr. Wade Davis, world-renowned anthropologist and author, as he shares insights from his latest book, Beneath the Surface of Things (2024). The conversation will be hosted by award-winning CBC journalist and UBC professor Kathryn Gretsinger. Drawing from decades of fieldwork, Dr. Davis reflects on the stories, places, and experiences that shape our understanding of culture, memory, nature, and meaning.

Described as “a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life’s diversity,” Dr. Davis is the author of more than 20 books, including The Serpent and the Rainbow, One River, The Wayfinders, Into the Silence (winner of the 2012 Samuel Johnson Prize), and Magdalena: River of Dreams.

From the Amazon to the Arctic, his work documenting endangered cultures and traditional knowledge, has influenced global conversations on cultural and ecological preservation. He is a Member of the Order of Canada, an honorary citizen of Colombia, and holds numerous honorary degrees from universities worldwide.

Presented by the Faculty Women’s Club at UBC, this event is our Scholarship Fundraiser. Proceeds support 16 scholarships and bursaries for UBC students. Your participation helps make a lasting difference.
