EVENT

What is the event for?

This event is in support of fundraising for the University of British Columbia Faculty Women’s Club Childcare Bursary for UBC students.  The Bursary will assist student parents facing financial hardship from the high costs of paid childcare while undertaking a university education.

Who will be speaking?

Professor Wade Davis from the UBC Department of Anthropology and the BC Leadership Chair in Culture and Ecosystems at Risk.  He is a renowned anthropologist and the author of twenty-two books, including Magdalena:  River of Dreams, One River, The Wayfinders, and Into the Silence, which won the 2021 Samuel Johnson Prize, the top award for literary nonfiction in the English Language.  He is a Harvard graduate with innumerable awards and life accomplishments.

Will there be a slide presentation?

Yes, Professor Davis will display a slideshow with his presentation about his book.

What is the Event Date and Time?

The event will be held on Monday, November 29th, 2021.  In light of the Provincial Health requirements, the organizers are required to check your BC Vaccination Card and Government Issued ID (along with your digital/printed Eventbrite ticket).  We recommend arriving no later than 6:30pm, as it will take time to conduct the check-in process.  Face masks are mandatory and please maintain a social distance of 2m / 6ft away from others.

Will Professor Wade’s book be available for purchase?

Yes, a limited number of books will be available for purchase in the lobby of the Frederic Wood Theatre. Credit card or debit card payments will be processed by the UBC Bookstore representative on site.

VENUE

Where is the event?

The event is held in the Frederic Wood Theatre, located on the UBC campus at 6354 Crescent Road, Vancouver B.C. 

Is parking available?

There is nearby parking at the UBC Rose Garden Parkade, located at 6278 NW Marine Drive, Vancouver.

Is there disabled access?

Yes, the venue is wheelchair accessible and has a self-operated elevator to access the theatre seating area, and a wheelchair accessible washroom on the lower floor.

Will there be assistance provided for the hearing impaired?

Regretfully, there will not be any hearing assistance provided.

Will the Frederic Wood Theatre concession be open in the lobby?

No, due to COVID-19 related health guidelines, regretfully the concession will not be open.

Does the Frederic Wood Theatre provide a coat and umbrella check in the lobby?

No, unfortunately the Frederic Wood Theatre does not have a coat/umbrella check.

TICKETS

How can I buy tickets and what form of payment is accepted?

Early bird tickets at $40 are available from https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/wade-david-presentation-magdalena-river-of-dreams-a-story-of-colombia-tickets-181385016467 until November 28th.  Same day tickets will be available at the door for $50, or $20 for students with valid IDs, if unsold tickets remain. For your convenience, we will update this website should tickets sell out.

Is there a limit on tickets available?

Yes, there is a limit of 200 tickets, to comply with provincial health guidelines of 50% venue capacity.

 Do you offer any group or student discounts?

No discount is available for the early bird tickets available online.

A discounted student ticket is available at the door for $20 if unsold tickets remain. For your convenience, we will update this website should tickets sell out.

Is there reserved seating?

No, all tickets are general admission and first come, first served.  We recommend that you arrive early to have the greatest choice.  You may sit together with your personal group (“bubble”), but please leave 1 seat space between you and the people on either side of you or your “bubble”.

Will tickets be available at the door?

Yes, provided the event is not sold out through online booking.  Tickets at the door are $50 per person; $20 for students with valid IDs. For your convenience, we will update this website should tickets sell out.

What does my ticket include?

Admission to the event (in person, or online, in case of a change to a Zoom meeting instead due to changes in Public Health Orders).

 Can I purchase a ticket after the closing date on EventBrite?

If tickets are not sold out on EventBrite, then remaining tickets will be available at the door at a price of $50. For your convenience, we will update this website should tickets sell out.

 What is your refund policy? 

Tickets are non-refundable. In the event that you cannot attend, please kindly consider giving your ticket to someone else.

What happens if the event cannot be held in person?

A live Zoom presentation will be given instead.  Anyone with tickets will be notified of the Zoom login details, at the email address specified when they purchased the ticket.

What if I cannot attend the event but would like to give a donation to the Childcare Bursary Fundraiser?

Your donations to the Childcare Bursary are greatly appreciated at any time. 

Please donate through the UBC Development Office and receive a Charitable Receipt at:  https://donate.give.ubc.ca/page/68046/donate/1.  Under “Direct My Gift to” choose “Other” and then fill in the words “Faculty Women’s Club Childcare Bursary” directly underneath. Please note that the site defaults to $125, but you can click on any amount of your choice.

Will I receive a receipt from my ticket purchase?

Yes, it will be emailed to you at the email address that you provided to Eventbrite.

AT THE EVENT

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Your Eventbrite ticket will be required for access to the event.  Please bring a printed copy or a digital ticket on a mobile phone, that can be shown and scanned at the door.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn’t match the attendee.  Is that okay?

Yes, as long as you provide a ticket (proof of registration), you are welcome to join.

Are pets welcome?

Only service dogs are permitted.

 Is proof of vaccination for COVID-19 required?

Yes, under the current Provincial Health Order and UBC Guidelines, the Frederic Wood Theatre requires all attendees to show proof of vaccination.  Only the BC Vaccine Card, printed or digital, will be accepted for BC residents.  Non-BC residents they will be required to show a provincially/territorially officially recognized vaccine record.

Is proof of identity required?

Yes, all attendees must also show a valid government photo ID.

Are masks required?

At this time, masks or face coverings are mandatory inside the Frederic Wood Theatre as per Provincial Public Health Order and UBC Guidelines.  Please maintain social distancing at all times and choose your seat in the theatre with this in mind.

Will masks be provided at the theatre entrance?

Please bring your own masks or you can buy a mask for $1 each.

 Will hand sanitizers be available?

Hand sanitizers will be available for your use

Do you have a symptom free policy?

We ask attendees to remain vigilant and monitor their own health in accordance with guidelines and information provided by the health authority.  If you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19, the flu or a cold, or if you are feeling ill in any way, we kindly ask that you not attend the event, to protect yourself and the health of others.
